The new £40m Radcliffe Hub in Bury will play a key role in Bury Council’s strategy to regenerate the town. Funding for the three storey civic hub came from the council and also the government’s Levelling Up Fund.
Designed by Pozzoni Architecture, the multi-use building will include leisure facilities, a library and learning facilities, as well as accommodation for council staff, NHS services and retail space. It will also include space for food outlets and a community events space.
Before construction could begin the old TSB building was demolished and cleared away, then excavation work was required to create the basement and prepare the site for the new steel framed structure.
During construction, Hoard-it installed 241 LM of hoarding panels, 6LM of temporary vertical concrete barriers and three 7m vehicle gates to secure the site. Brand-it provided the site graphics, which included 137 branded anti-graffiti panels, helping to protect the site and improve its appearance during construction.
In addition to the new Radcliffe Hub, the regeneration plans include the Market Chambers and the Market Hall chambers being refurbished. On the ground floor the civic hub will feature swimming pools with 150 spectator seats and a 2,500 square foot changing area. The indoor climbing facility, Clip n Climb, will take up 1,700 square feet and provide several climbing walls.
Additional features include a 5,000 square foot fitness suite, two multi-purpose studios and a 5,000 square foot library. Office space on the second floor will take up most of the space, as well as secure office space and meeting rooms for NHS staff.
The ambitious new project is an innovative building which will combine public services, community spaces and leisure facilities, creating a state of the art destination to increase day footfall in the area and breathe new life into the town centre.
