Meadowbank Sports Centre
The new Meadowbank Sports Centre development in Edinburgh was awarded to Maxi Construction. The £47 million pound project is a replacement for the original Meadowbank facility which was built for the 19780 Commonwealth Games. It was closed on 2017 and the building was decommissioned to make way for the new sports centre.
The City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh Leisure worked closely with Maxi Construction on this project which is an important investment for the city’s future. The new Meadowbank will provide opportunities for future generations of athletes and the local community who want to participate in physical activities and sports.
The new centre will include an outdoor athletics track with a 500-seat stand, two multi-sports games halls, a 60m six-lane indoor athletics track and jumps space, two FIFA-standard 3G pitches along with many other facilities.
The state of the art fitness centre will provide the best facilities for sport and physical activity, while also prioritising participation and accessibility. It is being designed to support health and well-being in Edinburgh for generations to come, while also recognising the legacy of the previous Meadowbank centre. It has improved indoor facilities with a large number of exercise stations in the gym and three large fitness studios so more people can participate at the same time.
Maxi Construction asked Hoard-it to provide a hoarding solution for the site. We delivered 475 LM of timber hoarding panels for the new Meadowbank Sports Centre. Meadowbank is expected to become one of the country’s top community sports centres and it is expected to be extremely popular with many forms of sports, activity and exercise class.
Remaining physically active is extremely important and in addition to physical benefits, it has enormous mental and social benefits. It also brings together different generations who might not normally interact with one another.
The design includes versatile lighting, and a lot of the large spaces have large windows to make the best use of natural light and reduce energy costs. Further developments close the site are now being explored with the possibility of a residential project on neighbouring land.
