Old Oak Common

LONDON

The Old Oak Common train station will provide an interchange between the HS2 and the new Elizabethan Line to central London, Heathrow Airport, Slough and Reading, Heathrow Express and Great Western Railway services. Once complete, it is estimated that the station will handle 250,000 passengers a day.

Old Oak Common will have 14 platforms with twin tunnels taking high speed trains east to the Southern terminus at Euston, and west to the outskirts of London. Six of the platforms will be underground and eight platforms on the adjacent Great Western Main Line. The 850 metre long underground station base was constructed using 76,000 cubic metres of concrete and 17,000 tonnes of reinforced steel.

Hoard-it installed approximately 175 linear meters of hoarding panels, as well as a pedestrian gate, to ensure public safety throughout the project. Once the panels were place, Brand-it supplied the HS2 branded site graphic solutions which highlight the investment being made in the area by the project.

During construction of the station, the project is expected to employ approximately 2,5000 jobs at its peak, as it transforms a former railway and industrial area into a transport hub. Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA are the main contractors on this joint venture. They provided a number of work placements and apprenticeships during the project, as well as new jobs for people in the local area.

Sustainability and environmental best practice have been paramount during the construction of the station, and it was recently given an award which highlighted that all electricity on site came from renewable sources. The station is also on track to be awarded an Outstanding BREEAM rating.

The new station will ease congestion and overcrowding on existing lines, and increase rail capacity across the UK. In addition to the train station there will be a new public park for the local community to enjoy, and extensive retail facilities for passengers.
